Back again. So I got a big job in December that has helped a lot. I had to sign a massive NDA (non-disclosure agreement), and I'm not sure that even now I can say exactly what it was. Anyway, it's still running. Let's just say I got to work with some colorful, iconic characters, and I'm proud of the whole thing. I got to spend 4 days in San Francisco shooting it, giving me my first real chance to visit that city since my summer at American Conservatory Theater ended in 2000. I have many dear memories of that summer, and was thrilled to get a chance to remind myself of them. I love walking around that city, the food, the amazing views of the bay and the bridges. Now I'm planning to take the whole family up for a couple of days when we can.
Overall, commercial auditions have been down a bit so far this year. However, since the first of the year, I have booked a few regional spots. No complaints there.
One was for a big grocery chain in the South, which a lot of my friends got a kick out of. Turns out the art director for the spot and I went to the same university. It was a long day of fun shooting, followed by a second day for the print component. That was a good way to start the year. Of course, the day of the shoot I also got an audition for a primetime show. I tried to race from Venice to Hollywood, but at 5:30pm on a weekday, guess how that worked out. No go. Go slow. Go home. I couldn't make the appointment. Oh, and I had to retire my Maxima. So, we've been living as a one-car family since February. Thanks, Murph.
In April, I shot a couple of spots for a regional automotive industry franchise. Those should be running...I think. That day was something else. April is typically very nice here in LA. But the day of the shoot, temps were in the mid-40's and it was very, very windy. My wardrobe consisted of a short-sleeved shirt and some work pants. Everyone on the set was sympathetic and good about giving me time to get and stay warm between shots. I drank a LOT of hot tea. It was funny to be standing there shivering, teeth chattering away, and then force yourself to pull it all together in an instant just before "action," as though it was just another gorgeous day in California. I had fun and came away with yet another story about life in this business. And maybe I'll be "the guy" for their future spots...let's do it.
